A relatively unknown autumn spot in Tokyo: Otaguro Park

Looking for places to enjoy autumn with fewer crowds?

Then add this to your list in Tokyo: Otaguro Park. Opened in 1981, this is the site of the former residence of Motoo Otaguro, a well-known music critic who introduced Western classical music to Japan. About a ten-minute walk from Ogikubo Station, this park is easily accessible from areas like Shinjuku. And no surprise, in autumn, it is absolutely spectacular.

At the entrance of the park is Ginkgo Avenue, which apparently has been around for the last 100 years. These towering giants create a majestic golden tunnel that welcomes you into the quiet sanctuary of the garden.

A Haven for Bird Watching

Bird watchers love to visit this place as you can see a variety of native birds fluttering their wings around. Although the information is only in Japanese, you can still look at the pictures and try to spot these beauties, such as the Japanese White-eye or Oriental Tit.

Strolling Through the Japanese Garden

Stone bridges, ponds, a waterfall, and various viewing pavilions dot the park. Even if you miss autumn, this is a wonderful place to enjoy a stroll. The landscape was designed to inherit Mr. Otaguro’s wish for a public space that heals the soul through nature and music.
