Hang out with mini pigs in Tokyo!?

Have you been to a cafe where you can meet animals? We have previously introduced a mame shiba (dog) cafe too! In this feature, we introduce mipig cafe, the first cafe in Japan where you can meet and play with adorable micro pigs!

Since opening its first branch in Meguro, mipig cafe has become a massive hit, expanding to over 17 locations across Japan, including Harajuku, Asakusa, and even Kyoto and Sapporo. As of December 2025, it remains one of Tokyo’s most popular animal-interaction experiences.

What are Micro Pigs?

The micro pig is a miniature breed originally from England. Despite the name, “micro” refers to their size relative to farm pigs; they are incredibly social, intelligent, and clean animals. In fact, they love human company and will often climb right onto your lap for a nap!

Meet the Piggies at the Meguro Branch

The Meguro branch is where it all started. It’s a multi-story cafe designed to feel like a “home” for the pigs. The cafe is warm, woody, and cozy. Pigs of various sizes roam freely—from tiny piglets to slightly older “graduate” pigs who might be as big as a Shiba dog. And you’ll be seated on comfortable floor cushions. Almost as soon as you settle in, the pigs will likely trot over to investigate you or snuggle up for a snooze.

Important Rules & Tips

To ensure the health and happiness of the pigs, the cafe has strict guidelines:

  • Gentle Touch: Please pat them gently on their backs or sides. Avoid staring directly into their eyes as it can startle them.
  • Hand Safety: Use your palm to pet them. Do not bring your fingers near their mouths, as they might mistake them for food!
  • No Lifting: Most branches (including Meguro) do not allow you to pick up the pigs. Let them come to you—they are very curious and social!
  • Photo Etiquette: You are welcome to take photos, but please turn off your flash to protect the pigs’ sensitive eyes.

Health & Entry Restrictions

Do you know of dangerous infectious diseases related to pigs?

  • Hog Cholera/Swine Fever: You are not allowed to enter if you have visited a country affected by African Swine Fever (ASF) or have been in contact with livestock (like visiting a farm) within the past 48 hours.
  • General Health: Pigs can catch the flu from humans! If you are feeling unwell or have a fever, please reschedule your visit.

Therefore, if you’ve been to China two weeks prior to your visit to Japan, you may not be allowed to enter the cafe for the safety of the pigs. Thank you for your understanding.

Some people think that micro pigs don’t very big but that’s not the case. They can grow up to be as big as a Shiba Dog. On the third floor of the cafe, you can see one of the bigger pigs.

One of the pigs decided to take a nap on our editor’s lap!

Since its such a cozy place, you can see micro pigs snoozing all the day 😀

Doesn’t it look like a place to relax after a long day of traveling and walking?

It’s difficult to explain in words about our wonderful experience. So how about you visit this place on your next trip to Japan? The cafe now operates primarily on a reservation-only system. It is highly recommended to book online weeks in advance. (Reservations)
