Kissa Laundry in Tokyo adds a coffee twist to laundry!

Famous for its sumo culture, Ryogoku is just a stone’s throw from the Tokyo Skytree and Asakusa. If you’re staying in this area and looking for a unique, local experience, Kissa Laundry is a must-visit. Since its opening in 2018, this “Semi-Public” space has redefined what a laundromat can be.

The Cafe Space: A “Mole” Haven

The name Kissa comes from kissaten (traditional Japanese coffee shop), and the interior reflects that warmth.

Warm lighting and comforting interiors creates a beautiful cozy atmosphere. The furniture used in this place has been previously used at various traditional cafes (kissaten)!

These low seats are called “mogura-seki” meaning mole seats. Aren’t they perfect to slouch in? You could spend quite a lot of time on a hot day in these.

You see plenty of small objects at the self-service counter. Each one has a purpose and isn’t there just for decoration.

Order your drink or meal at the counter. You can also find records and books written by the owner of this place for sale here. Not just that, the owner’s mother also has her own handicrafts on display. You can even buy something as a souvenir!

Laundry Corner

There are three washing machines and three dryers; you can use these after paying at the counter. If you don’t understand how to use the machines, you can read this book!

To our surprise, next to the machines, there are electronic drums! Apparently, the only reason they are here is because the owner thought it would be interesting! Provided with headphones, you can drum your frustration while doing your laundry, maybe?

Toilet

Even the toilet has been thoughtfully designed. How gorgeous is that mirror with lights?

Lots of paraphernalia adds a homely feel.

Perfect for anyone!

Here it isn’t just a place for laundry; it’s a place for life.

Many people from the neighborhood as well as from afar visit the Kissa Laundry. Quite a contrast from the stark and sterile interiors at regular coin laundries!

You can relax with a book, grab a coffee or chit-chat with a friend. Even if you’re doing laundry, you will feel as if you’re relaxing in your own home while waiting for the machine to finish.

While you wait, who knows you might make new friends? The staff in the Kissa Laundry are really sweet and usually start a conversation which will instantly brighten your day.

If you’re planning to stay in the area for a while, how about trying out this Kissa Laundry? The curry here is awesome, how about dropping by for a novel laundry/cafe experience?
