Table of Contents

The Shibuya Ward Office in Tokyo has announced that the new Yoyogi Park will begin a phased reopening on 20 February 2025.

Beyond its fresher design and upgraded facilities, the project is intertwined with the wave of new buildings that have risen in Shibuya over the past few years.

All of these improvements aim to bring to life an advanced district dubbed the “Greater Shibuya Area.” Let’s take a closer look!

What Is the Greater Shibuya Area?

The Greater Shibuya Area is a large‑scale urban‑redevelopment concept proposed by the Tokyu Group in 2018.

Centered on Shibuya Station, a 2.5 km² radius will undergo comprehensive revitalization. Notable new buildings already completed within this zone include:

  • Shibuya Sakura Stage in Sakuragaoka
  • HARAKADO on the former Tokyu Plaza Harajuku site
  • Forestgate Daikanyama in Daikanyama

Revitalization of Yoyogi Park

The rejuvenation of Yoyogi Park is one of many initiatives within the Greater Shibuya Area project.

Inspired by the recent makeover of Meiji Jingu Gaien, this plan will transform the decades‑old park into a modern green space that matches the “Greater Shibuya Area” style.

Very soon, both local residents and international visitors will be able to enjoy the park’s new face.

Yoyogi Park is Back with a New Look

Located between Shibuya and Harajuku and bordered by the Meiji Jingu Shrine forest, Yoyogi Park is renowned for its vast lawns and iconic fountain. Since opening in 1967, the park has been beloved by both locals and tourists.

To align with the “Greater Shibuya Area” concept, Yoyogi has undergone extensive renovations: green space has been expanded, the fountain upgraded, and a variety of new facilities added—from an outdoor skate park to a natural plaza where children and adults can relax together.

Beneath the grassy area now lies the “Yoyogi Open Plaza,” a multifunctional space for relaxation that can be transformed into an event stage.

Starting in mid‑March, a commercial zone featuring cafés and restaurants is also planned, making Yoyogi Park not only a jogging spot but a leisure destination for families and travelers alike.

Other Landmarks Inside the Greater Shibuya Area

  • Shibuya Sakura Stage
A large‑scale mixed‑use complex made up of the Shibuya Tower and Central Building. By blending entertainment venues, retail, and office space, it has become the busiest hub in Sakuragaoka.
  • HARAKADO
Rising at the Jingumae intersection, this spot is a magnet for trends and pop culture, reinforcing Shibuya’s image as a hotbed of fashion and new innovation.
  • Forestgate Daikanyama
Comprising a Main Building and Tenoha Building, the complex fuses “live, work, and play” in one district. In addition to 57 residential units, it offers restaurants, fashion boutiques, and a members‑only coworking space—embodying the latest in “Shibuya‑style” living.
