The best of autumn and trains in Japan

Japan’s dense train network offers more than just efficiency; in autumn, it becomes a moving theater for the country’s spectacular fall colors. As we enter 2026, these scenic lines remain a top priority for travelers and photographers looking to capture the “countryside soul” of Japan.

Here are the most iconic autumn train routes and what you need to know for your 2026 trip.

Kurobe Gorge Unazuki Torokko Train, Toyama

Running from Unazuki to Keyakidaira, this open-air trolley train is a masterpiece of engineering.

Kurobe

Due to damage from the 2024 Noto Peninsula Earthquake, the line currently operates only as far as Nekomata Station. While the full route to Keyakidaira is aiming for a potential late 2026 reopening, the current shorter trip still offers the most popular view at Yamabiko Tenbodai, where the bright red bridge contrasts with the deep blue Kurobe River.

Suigun Line, Ibaraki

The Suigun Line (JR水郡線) runs between Mito Station in Ibaraki and Asaka-Nagamori Station in Fukushima. The autumn foliage is best between Yamagatajuku Station and Iwaki-Ishii Station as the train traverses through a valley. Yamatsuriyama Station (矢祭山) is the most popular area; if you follow the river along the tracks, you are bound to get a glimpse of the train zooming through the foliage.

Eizan Railway, Kyoto

Eizan Train (叡山電鉄) runs from Demachiyanagi Station up to Kibune and Kurama in the north of Kyoto. The Momiji Leaf Tunnel between Ichihara Station and Ninose Station has both sides of the tracks lined by kaede (Japanese maple).

Tadami Train Line, Fukushima

The Tadami Line (只見線) runs from Aizu-wakamatsu to Koide. The best photo spot along here is the Tadamigawa Bridge No. 1 (只見川第一橋梁). A bit tricky to get here by public transport and most photographers choose to drive up here. Also popular for its snowy winter scene.

Sanriku Tetsudou Kita Riasu Line, Iwate

Since 2019, the North and South Rias lines have been integrated into one continuous 163km route along the rugged Pacific coast.

The Oozawa Bridge between Horinai and Shiraikaigan stations. The train often slows down or stops briefly on the bridge to allow passengers to take photos of the dramatic cliffs and autumn-draped hills meeting the ocean.

Check the latest timetable at the station; these local trains are infrequent, and you’ll want to be on the “ocean side” (left side when heading north) for the best views.

A Seasonal Journey

In 2026, traveling by train through the Japanese countryside is as much about the journey as the destination. Whether you’re seeing the “fire” of the Kyoto maples or the “gold” of the Fukushima gorges, these lines offer a front-row seat to nature’s best performance.
