Tokyo Metro Ginza Line: The New Shibuya Gateway

The new platform of the Tokyo Metro Ginza Line’s Shibuya Station is now fully open, following construction. The new entrance is next to Shibuya Hikarie, and is also connected to some of the most famous commercial facilities near Shibuya Station.

Tokyo Metro Ginza Line is the first subway line in Japan and in the Asia-Pacific region. If you’re lucky, you might be able to get on the original 1000-series when taking the Ginza Line.

The ticket gates are painted in orange; a trademark color of Ginza Line.

The Permanent Platform Design

The fully operational platform is much wider and cleaner than the old one, which was not only narrow but also packed with many passengers.

The main highlight of this elevated structure is the M-shaped roof, which was designed by architect Hiroshi Naito. This unique design gives futuristic vibes and a more open feel to the station by removing the need for internal pillars.

Shibuya Redevelopment Context

The redevelopment plan of the Shibuya Station area is scheduled for substantial completion around 2030, with major commercial expansions expected to open around 2031. Shibuya area will become a new international business center of Tokyo. The redevelopment of Shibuya Station will allow more people to throng the station and easily access the commercial facilities around the station.

Seamless Shibuya Access

The new Ginza Line platform vastly improves passenger flow and accessibility in the Shibuya area, connecting commuters and visitors directly to the surrounding commercial hubs. This major upgrade is a foundational part of the area’s ongoing redevelopment, promising a more efficient and modern experience for everyone.
