Kamakura is a popular tourist destination for day trips from Tokyo among both Japanese and foreigners, as it has been the setting for many famous anime and films. Other than ancient temples, the giant Buddha, and the Shonan sea, there are many restaurants and cafés unique to this area. In this feature, we introduce a cute café in Kamakura: a great little space to enjoy a meal or drink.

Known as Tsubame Cafe, from the outside the building looks like it is someone’s residence and has stood here for 85 years. Just a 10-minute walk from Kamakura Station, this café offers organic, healthy food and has a charming, age-old feel to it.

By the gate, you can see the sign in Japanese (燕カフェ).

Ambiance and Interior

As soon as you step in, you will be transported to a realm of quiet with warm light streaming through the windows.

Dried flowers adorn the space, adding a touch of brightness, and bits-and-bobs are scattered in nooks, giving it a homely feel.

The furniture is all vintage. Just looking at the furniture and the light from the windows will make you feel unbelievably relaxed.
Menu and Details

There are plenty of drinks to choose from, ranging from herbal teas to coffee.

You can also choose a set that includes a dessert and a drink. Lunch is also available in limited quantities. Make sure to arrive early on weekends.

The menu changes seasonally to ensure the food served uses the best, fresh seasonal produce of Japan.

Look how elegant even the Cola Float is here!

Attention to detail is what makes this café special.

The annin-dofu came with ice cream and fruit pieces, and was silky smooth and soft.
If you plan to visit Kamakura for a day trip, make sure to stop by here.
