Shirakawago Light Up for 2026

Shirakawa-go is a UNESCO World Heritage site that attracts visitors from all over the world. Traditional Japanese houses built in the ancient Gassho-style (Gassho-zukuri) create a scene that seems to come straight out of a fairy tale. The Winter Light-Up is the biggest event of the year, where you can see the giant triangular roofs glowing against the deep snow!

The Architecture of Survival

Shirakawa-go is an area famous for its traditional houses with steep, thatched roofs, designed specifically for heavy snowfall. These roofs are crafted from a plant called kaya and set at a sharp angle to allow heavy snow to slide off easily. In 1995, it was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage site, preserving a living history of rural Japan.

The 2026 Light-Up Schedule

The light-up is held only on a few select nights during the peak of winter. For 2026 (the 40th Anniversary), the event is strictly limited to four sessions.
