Impressive Hina-kazari, a doll display, at the Keio Plaza Hotel in Shinjuku! Enjoy Hina-matsuri, doll festival, that provides an early taste of spring in Japan♪

March 3 is called “Momo-no-sekku” (Peach Ceremony). Each family displays Hina dolls as an ancient Japanese tradition to wish for a girl’s happiness and celebrate Hina-matsuri (Doll Festival) together.

Although this festival started around the 1500s, only wealthy families were able to display Hina dolls at that time. Ordinary families brought kimono fabric, made small dolls, and displayed them instead. These dolls are called Tsurushi-hina (dolls hung on a string). Each doll has a distinctive meaning and is filled with a parent’s love for their daughter.

Amazing Hina-kazari at Keio Plaza Hotel, a high-rise hotel in Shinjuku, Tokyo!

Hina-matsuri is originally celebrated within households; therefore, overseas travelers rarely get to experience it. However, the Hina-kazari at the main lobby on the third floor of Keio Plaza Hotel in Shinjuku has become a premier spot where visitors can experience this beautiful tradition!

A time-honored Hinadan-kazari—a set of ornamental dolls displayed on tiered platforms covered with red carpet—is placed in the center. The dolls are made by artisans acknowledged by Kamigamo Shrine, Kyoto. In 2026, as many as 6,800 Tsurushi-hina dolls are hung from a height of 3.3 meters around the display. Guests from all over the world rave about this magnificent beauty, which is truly breathtaking.

Make a Traditional Nioibukuro (Perfume Sachet)

As a special event held alongside the display, workshops for making a Nioibukuro are often available for travelers.

Japanese people have carried these small pouches filled with fragrant wood chips since ancient times, using them as a personal perfume. Immersing yourself in both the Hina-kazari and the Nioibukuro experience allows for a deep connection with Japanese culture. Your original sachet will certainly become a precious memory of your trip!

Dates typically fall in mid-February. Please check the hotel’s current “Journey into Japan” schedule for exact session times.

Enjoy a beautiful Hina-matsuri lunch!

Ten restaurants within the Keio Plaza Hotel offer special Hina-matsuri themed lunches during the exhibition period. We highly recommend trying washoku (Japanese food) while you are here.

Soujuan, the hotel’s Kaiseki restaurant, offers a sophisticated multi-course meal featuring motifs of Hina dolls. Each dish is prepared with meticulous care, providing a high-end cultural experience at an accessible lunch price.

Experience Hina-matsuri through your senses of sight, smell, and taste. Enjoy this celebration of spring at this iconic Shinjuku landmark.
