Heads up, Japan shoppers: starting November 1, 2026, tax-free shopping in Japan works differently. Instead of getting the consumption tax taken off at the register, you’ll pay the full price first and get the tax back when you leave the country.
The good news? Our exclusive Don Quijote coupon still saves you money. Here’s how to use it, what’s changing with the new tax refund system, and why Don Quijote (or “Donki,” as locals call it) is one of the easiest places to shop under the new rules.

What’s Changing with Tax-Free Shopping in Japan?
In short: no more instant tax-free at the register. You’ll pay the tax-inclusive price when you shop, and the consumption tax is refunded after customs checks your purchases at departure. Here’s a side-by-side look:
| Until October 31, 2026 | From November 1, 2026 | |
|---|---|---|
| At the store | Pay the tax-free price (or get the tax back at the store’s tax-free counter) | Pay the full price, including tax, and register how you want to get your refund (e.g., credit card) |
| At the airport | Customs check after security | Customs check before security, within 90 days of purchase |
| Your refund | Done at the store | Paid by the store after the customs check |
Good to know:
- How and when you register your refund details depends on the store or refund service.
- Bring all your tax-free items from the same purchase to the customs check. If you’ve already used or eaten something, or packed it in your checked luggage, you may not get the refund for that purchase.
For the official details, see the Japan Tourism Agency’s guide to the new tax refund system (PDF).
Why Shopping at Don Quijote Makes Sense Now
Under the new system, every store may handle refunds a little differently. If you’re bouncing between drugstores, souvenir shops, and electronics stores, that means:
- Following a different refund process at each store
- Double-checking you haven’t missed a refund
- Hanging on to a pile of receipts
“Wait, where did I register my refund details?” “Did I already claim this receipt?” Sorting that out store by store eats into your vacation time. Doing most of your shopping in one place keeps things simple and leaves more time for sightseeing and food.
Why Don Quijote?
Everything under one roof: Cosmetics, medicine, snacks, souvenirs, electronics, everyday essentials, and anime merch, all in one store
Open late: Many stores stay open late, and some are open 24 hours, so you can shop after sightseeing or dinner
Less paperwork: One store means fewer receipts and refund claims to keep track of
No Refund Handling Fee at Don Quijote
Processing tax refunds costs stores time and money, so under the new system, some may charge a handling fee, and that fee can come out of your refund.
Don Quijote won’t charge its own refund handling fee*, so more of your tax refund stays in your pocket. One-stop shopping plus no handling fee: that’s what makes Donki a smart pick under the new system.
*Applies only to the refund handling fee set by Don Quijote. The exchange rate for your refund may include currency conversion fees set by your credit card company or payment provider. If you choose to receive your refund in cash at the airport, the refund service provider will charge a fee. Currency conversion fees and airport cash pickup fees are not charged by Don Quijote. This service may change or end without notice.
