Studio Ghibli, the legendary animation studio behind beloved films, like My Neighbor Totoro, Spirited Away, and Howl’s Moving Castle, will hold the “Ghibli 3D Model Exhibition” in Tokyo from May 27 to September 23, 2025.
Curious about what will be on display and what kind of exciting content awaits? Let’s dive into the details together!
After 22 Years, the Ghibli 3D Model Exhibition Returns to Tokyo

With The Boy and the Heron screened in over 80 countries, Ghibli’s films have become cultural icons not just in Japan but across the globe.
Behind their worldwide success stands a dedicated group of supporters from various countries and regions who work tirelessly to share these stories with the world.
The upcoming “Ghibli 3D Model Exhibition” in Tokyo will focus on showcasing three-dimensional models that illustrate how Ghibli’s works have reached audiences in North America, Europe, and Asia.
Originally launched in 2003 as Studio Ghibli’s first exhibition, the event will make a grand return to its homeland after 22 years, held at Terada Warehouse in Tennozu, Tokyo.

Iconic Scenes from Ghibli Films Come to Life in 3D

Visitors will get to experience iconic scenes from My Neighbor Totoro, Spirited Away, Howl’s Moving Castle, Pom Poko, Whisper of the Heart, and more — all recreated as stunning three-dimensional displays.
Whether you’re reliving childhood memories or seeing them fresh for the first time, these sculptures offer a fully immersive experience that pulls you right into the world of Ghibli.
One major highlight is the life-sized replica of the SAVOIA S.21, the airplane featured in Porco Rosso.
Tokusatsu (special effects) expert Hiroshi Ibara led the design with the idea: “What if this plane really existed?” The result is a powerful, realistic sculpture that looks ready to take off at any moment — a must-see for every visitor.
Special Screening of Short Animation “Imaginary Flying Machines”
In addition to the 3D model, the exhibition will also feature a special screening of Imaginary Flying Machines, a short animation created by Hayao Miyazaki for the Ghibli Museum in Mitaka. The screening aligns with the exhibition’s theme, Hot Winds Across the Ocean.
This six-minute film explores the whimsical flying machines imagined by people who long to soar across the skies.
Miyazaki wrote the original story and screenplay, while longtime collaborator Joe Hisaishi composed the music.
If you’re a fan of Ghibli or Hayao Miyazaki, this short film is a must-watch. Be sure to catch it when you visit the exhibition in Tokyo!
