Mt. Fuji International Marathon: Race Under the Autumn Leaves

One of the most celebrated mountains in Japan, Mt. Fuji presents a stunning seasonal transformation through the year—from spring cherry blossoms to the pure white snow of winter. Registered as a World Cultural Heritage site in 2013, it serves as the breathtaking backdrop for the annual Mt. Fuji International Marathon.

In 2026, the 14th edition of this international event is scheduled for mid-December (tentatively December 13, 2026). Every year, approximately 14,000 participants—including over 2,000 international runners from 40+ countries—gather at the foot of the mountain to experience this unique race.

Runners at the start line by Lake Kawaguchi being cheered by a lot of supporters.

Breathtaking Courses for Every Level

The marathon course is blessed with views of bright autumn leaves and the serene lakeside of Lake Kawaguchi and Lake Saiko. In 2026, there are three main categories to choose from:

Full Marathon (42.195km)

A challenging and scenic course going around Lake Kawaguchi and Lake Saiko.

Around Kawaguchiko (approx. 17km)

A popular mid-distance option for those who want to enjoy the scenery at a brisker pace.

Charity Fun Run (approx. 11km)

A non-competitive run around Lake Kawaguchi, perfect for families and beginners.

Local Support and “Omotenashi”

What makes this race special is the generous support from the local community. High school students and volunteers cheer runners along the tough 80m climb, and aid stations provide plenty of fuel. After crossing the finish line, runners are traditionally treated to warm pork-based soup (tonjiru) to help recover from the winter chill.

Sight of helpful local supporters is heartwarming

The Iconic 3D Mt. Fuji Medal

The commemorative finisher’s medal is shaped like Mt. Fuji and is a prized souvenir for international participants.

If you finish the full marathon five times, your five stand-alone medals can be connected to create a 3D model of Mt. Fuji!

All overseas participants receive a participation prize, which in 2026 typically includes an eco-friendly, original long-sleeve T-shirt.

2026 Entry Fees & Registration

For 2026, registration fees for international participants are as follows:

Full Marathon: ¥25,000

Around Kawaguchiko (17km): ¥18,000

Charity Fun Run (11km): ¥10,000
