The unconventional plot of “Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End”
Frieren is a fairy race wizard who has lived for over a thousand years. In the animation, he always looks a little lazy and is interested in learning new magic and digging up magic books and props. But in reality, Frieren once participated in a conspiracy half a century ago. The small team that defeated the Demon King consisted of Himmel the Hero, Eisen the dwarf warrior, and Heiter the Priest.
They defeated the Demon King and returned triumphantly. When they returned to the kingdom to receive their commendation, they happened to see a meteor shower that occurred once every 50 years. The four of them promised that they would go to the place recommended by Frieren to enjoy the meteor shower together again after 50 years.
50 years later, the four of them meet again. Except for Frieren, all of his companions are old. After enjoying the meteor shower, Himmel the Hero passed away. Compared to the long-lived elves, the lifespan of humans is very short. After Himmel’s death as a human, Frieren regrets not knowing Himmel well during that time, which also makes Frieren understand the people around him. “Humans” have a desire to understand.
Then, Frieren along with his apprentice Fern, who was entrusted by Heiter, and Eisen’s apprentice Stark, set out on a journey to subdue the Demon King again, and search for Himmel’s spirit in the northernmost place where the Demon King was defeated, so that Frieren could hear Himmel’s unfinished words at that time.
In the anime Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End, “Several years after the death of Himmel the Hero” is mentioned several times, in contrast to Frieren’s long life. After Frieren begins his journey again, the scenery and encounters on the road constantly trigger Frieren’s memories of his previous journey, and he understands the true meaning of the kindness and gentleness he has received, and makes Frieren appreciate Fern and Stark who travel with him even more.
