A World Heritage Site on Miyajima Island that you must see on your trip to Japan

Itsukushima Shrine is situated on Miyajima Island, Hiroshima. The shrine and its iconic red torii gate comprise one of the must-see UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Japan. The stunning view during high tide, when the shrine and gate appear to float on the sea, is incredibly “Instagrammable.”

Additionally, wild deer—regarded as messengers of the Gods—will greet you as you explore the island.

Enjoy eating local specialties such as oysters and Momiji Manju

Beyond the scenery, Miyajima’s local delicacies are a major attraction. Oysters are farm-raised in Hiroshima Bay right in front of the island. As Hiroshima is the top oyster-producing region in Japan, you can always enjoy them fresh here. We recommend walking around the island while savoring freshly grilled oysters and steamed Momiji Manju (maple leaf-shaped confections) purchased from the local shopping street.

Take a tram from the central city of Hiroshima to Miyajima Island!

Hiroshima’s municipal trams have been operating for over 100 years and remain the most enjoyable way to reach Miyajima. The journey from central Hiroshima takes approximately 40 minutes.

Since you’ve come all the way to Hiroshima, you should also try the local specialty, Hiroshima-style Okonomiyaki (savory pancakes with fried noodles), and visit Hiroshima Castle and the Atomic Bomb Dome at the Peace Memorial Park.

The hotel is easily accessible from the tram stop Chuden-mae Station, only a two-minute walk. This is a perfect location for enjoying a tram trip to the island. The fare for a one-way tram ride is a flat 180 yen within the central city. Very cheap! Even cheaper, if you buy a one-day ticket 840 yen including a ferry fare when visiting the island. The ticket will allow you unlimited rides within the central city for a whole day as well as to take a ferry from Miyajimaguchi ferry terminal to the island at no extra charge! The ticket is available for purchase at the hotel too.

Don’t miss trying Hiroshima-style Okonomiyaki!

You must try a Hiroshima-style Okonomiyaki when you are in Hiroshima! Please have one at Okonomi-mura, a building with more than 20 famous stalls, or at Okonomiyaki shops around the city! Hiroshima-style Okonimiyaki has fried noodles between the crepe-like thin pancakes along with other savory fillings, which differs from Osaka-style Okonomiyaki that has no noodles in it! Unbelieving filling!
