New Tokyo Autumn Illumination Spot! “ZEN NIGHT TOKYO” Debuts with Light, Sound & Zen Garden Aesthetics

After hugely successful runs at historic temples across Japan—including Kennin-ji in Kyoto, Kencho-ji in Kamakura, and Tofuku-ji in Kyoto—the immersive light-and-sound project “ZEN NIGHT” is making its highly anticipated Tokyo debut this autumn!

Running from October 14 to December 6, 2026, “ZEN NIGHT TOKYO” transforms the gardens of the Tokyo National Museum into a tranquil nightscape. Combining illuminated autumn leaves, rolling sea-of-clouds mist, and calming soundscapes, the event offers visitors a uniquely meditative night stroll. From moonlit ponds and zen rock gardens depicting the Milky Way to paths lined with glowing spider lilies, this experience shows a completely different side of the museum’s gardens after dark.

Fusing Tech & Tradition: “ZEN NIGHT” Arrives in Tokyo

First launched in 2024 at Kyoto’s Kennin-ji Temple, “ZEN NIGHT” is an immersive sound-art project that merges traditional Japanese philosophy with modern technology. Following subsequent editions in Kamakura and Kyoto, this 4th installation marks the project’s first-ever showcase in the capital.

Co-organized by the Tokyo National Museum, The Nihon Keizai Shimbun (Nikkei), and neurotechnology company VIE, the event grants rare evening access to the museum’s peaceful inner gardens, which normally close at 5:00 PM. Set around a central pond dotted with historic teahouses, visitors are invited to practice gyozen (walking meditation), slowing their pace as they stroll to the rhythm of “Neuro Music” specially developed by VIE.

Moonlit Ponds, Rolling Mist & Red Spider Lilies

Beyond the music, the gardens feature dramatic night illuminations and large-scale mist effects. As fog drifts across the water, illuminated trees and teahouses create an ethereal, dreamlike atmosphere. At Suigetsu Pond, visitors can admire the striking sight of autumn leaves and the night sky reflecting off the still water.

Along the paths surrounding Ten-go-an, a historic teahouse connected to master tea master Kobori Enshu, visitors will encounter “Hyakki Yado” (The Night Path of Spirits). Lined with 3,000 glowing red spider lilies (higanbana), the path captures the mysterious mood of ancient Japanese folklore.

When you need a rest, stop by the lakeside Momiji Teahouse to sip hot matcha or matcha lattes while taking in the illuminated autumn foliage.

“Brainwave Zazen”: Visualizing Meditation Through Tech

For a deeper dive into the intersection of Zen and tech, guests can reserve a session for Brainwave Zazen inside Kujo-kan. Participants wear brainwave-sensing headsets while meditating, and the system converts their real-time mental states into visual and auditory feedback, allowing them to observe their inner focus through their senses. (Note: Requires a dedicated date-and-time ticket).

Ticket Includes Access to the 700th Anniversary Daitoku-ji Exhibition

Every “ZEN NIGHT TOKYO” ticket also grants admission to the 700th Anniversary Special Exhibition: “Daitoku-ji: The Peerless Zen Temple of Japan”, held concurrently at the museum’s Heiseikan gallery.

The exhibition displays rare treasures preserved by Daitoku-ji Temple, including Muqi’s National Treasure painting Guanyin, Monkeys, and Crane, alongside a recreation of the temple’s Sanmon gate interior (normally closed to the public). Visitors can explore centuries of Zen art inside before heading out into the night garden to experience Zen through modern sound and light.
